Every working day in ArcelorMittal companies is a day when safety is thought of as the highest priority and value. However, on the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we use the opportunity to remember the previous year, what we did right, what we did wrong, we remember all colleagues who tragically lost their lives working within the units globally. The causes of the incidents represent a lesson for the next period so that the same thing does not happen again and that no worker is injured.
The results in the field of occupational health and safety in ArcelorMittal Prijedor in 2021 showed the great commitment of our company’s management, starting from the first line of management, foremen and supervisors, all the way to the top management. We treat health and safety as the highest priority, and the common goal of all employees is to return home alive and well to our families. In this regard, we did not have an incident with a serious injury at work, thus continuing a series of more than 5 years without serious injuries. We have identified over 400 unsafe conditions and behaviors, which we have worked diligently to eliminate. We analyzed 7 incidents with a high potential for injury or death, defined and implemented corrective measures to avoid possible consequences. With the presence of supervisory and technical staff at the site, we correct deviant behavior and build a culture of safety in workplaces with increased risk. Thanks to the large family of units within the ArcelorMittal company, we exchange experiences with others, learn from other people’s mistakes to avoid it happening to us. We pay special attention to the constant education of all employees in the field of health protection, occupational safety, and environmental protection, which is visible through many training programs.
This year’s video dedicated to safety was shown to workers through brigades during the months of May and June, and the central event of the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work was a combined exercise at the Buvač open pit with the attendance of over 250 employees. The aim of the exercise was to show the clear and unambiguous communication of dispatchers, emergency response teams, other participants in the SP, the use of equipment and the response itself. During the exercise, an incident of a collision between a dump truck and a low vehicle, information and first aid provision, response of the Emergency Response Team, and extinguishing of initial and intermediate fires were simulated.
In the end, we can say , very successful exercises ,thanks the participants of the exercise, the present workers were able to see the demining of the minefield and the application of safety measures when performing one of the more complex and dangerous jobs in mining.
“Priorities change – values always remain the same. That is why we build health and safety as a common value for all of us. Only by joint forces we can overcome the dangers and risks we encounter in the mining business”, said Mladen Jelača, CEO of ArcelorMittal Prijedor in his address to the employees.
