Our history

Production of iron ore in Prijedor mines has been going on for more than 105 years

Mining of iron ore and production of iron in Ljubija has been going on since the very beginning of the Iron Age, which is a period of over two thousand five hundred years, at least five centuries BC. The Phoenicians, searching for gold and silver, and then for iron, went along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to all areas rich in ores, and that’s how they arrived in our region. They built mines and smelters whose technology was primitive, but appropriate for the time.

Industrial production in the Ljubija metallogenetic area began in 1916, and significant progress in the production of iron ore was achieved in the middle of the 20th century with the introduction of mass excavation and the construction of plants for the preparation of iron ore. Massification of mining production enabled the construction of the Central Mines, the East Mines and the Omarska Mine, which operated within the framework of the RŽR Ljubija as three independent technical-technological units where the surface excavation and preparation of iron ore took place.

Commercial production and shipment of iron ore concentrate from the Omarska mine began with the establishment of a new company in August 2004, and the first tons in the reconstructed plant were produced and shipped on 17th December 2004.  It was the result of the great desire and efforts of the miners themselves, who, even before the scheduled deadline, with their own strength and knowledge, restored the mine, which had not been active for a long period of time. From then until today, production has been going on successfully and continuously. The production itself takes place in surface pits in the Omarska Mine.

In December 2008, the Buvač surface pit was opened, where production is still taking place today, and at the very beginning, production was also carried out on the Jezero and Mamuze surface pits, where excavation has been completed. At the time of its foundation, the Company was called Novi Rudnici Ljubija, and in 2006 it was renamed Mittal Mines Prijedor. Its current name, ArcelorMittal Prijedor d.o.o. is received  in May 2008. Company ArcelorMittal Prijedor d.o.o. Prijedor today employs around 800 workers and is a proud member of the local community in which it operates.

By starting integral production in ArcelorMittal Zenica, the complete production of iron ore concentrate is marketed to this steel plant, thus improving the economy of both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entities in which these two business entities operate.
